Experts warn of "summer diarrhea"

With the arrival of summer, diarrhea in children is one of the most common health problems. During this period, there is a serious increase in diarrhea cases due to reasons such as hot weather, insufficient attention to hygiene rules, and consumption of food and drinks sold outside.

Stating that diarrhea should be followed very carefully, especially in children under the age of 5, Medline Adana Hospital Child Health and Diseases Specialist Dr. Özgül Görür gave information by warning that the loss of water and minerals that may occur in such a case can lead to serious problems in a short time.

It develops due to bacteria or parasites.

Stating that summer diarrhea is usually caused by viruses, bacteria or parasites, Dr. Özgül Görür said, "One of the most common causes is rotavirus. In addition, bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli (Coli bacillus) can also cause diarrhea. These are usually transmitted to humans through dirty water, unwashed vegetables and fruits and poorly cooked foods. Diarrhea manifests itself with frequent and watery stools along with increased bowel movements. In addition, symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever and weakness can also be seen. Since children lose fluids more quickly, this can cause a very sensitive picture. Although summer diarrhea is usually mild, it should be followed very carefully, especially in children under the age of 5. Because water and mineral loss can lead to serious and unwanted problems in a short time."

Plenty of water and minerals should be taken

Underlining that the most important step in diarrhea treatment is to quickly replace lost fluids and minerals, Dr. Görür said, "Therefore, children should be given plenty of water, oral rehydration fluids containing salt and sugar, or fluids such as ayran and rice water that can be prepared at home. Attention should also be paid to nutrition during diarrhea. Light foods that do not strain the intestines such as yogurt, rice porridge, bananas, and boiled potatoes should be preferred. Oily, spicy and sugary foods should be avoided. Excessive fluid loss (dehydration) is the most dangerous result of diarrhea. If there are symptoms such as dry lips, decreased tear production, decreased skin elasticity, and inability to urinate, a health institution should be visited without delay. In addition, if the child has a high fever, bloody diarrhea, or diarrhea lasts longer than 2-3 days, it is necessary to see a doctor. In this case, antibiotic treatment or more special interventions may be required."

Dr. Görür also listed the things to consider for protection as follows:

"Encourage them to wash their hands frequently. Do not drink water from open water sources in the summer months; prefer bottled water. Wash vegetables and fruits thoroughly. Get food from outside from reliable places. Make sure that foods such as ice cream and fruit juice are fresh and stored in cold chain conditions."
